Our Learning

Curriculum

Learning at Darfield High School is all about opportunity and growth.

Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and help every student discover their strengths. From core subjects to a wide range of specialist courses, we provide pathways that support individual interests and future goals. Whether students are aiming for further study, training, or careers, we’re here to guide and encourage them every step of the way.

Junior Years

Our junior programme gives students a broad learning experience, helping them discover their strengths and build confidence while developing essential academic and social skills.

It is structured around English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, Health & Physical Education, Languages, Technology, and Digital Technologies, giving students the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects while developing essential skills for future study.

Our Arts programme allows students to develop their creativity and confidence through Art, Drama, and Music. In Languages, students can choose from Te Reo Māori, French, Spanish, Japanese, or Mandarin Chinese, with all Year 9 students taking at least one language. Students for whom English is an additional language can join our English Language Learning courses to build their skills.

In Technology, students can explore Food Technology, Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technologies, Materials – Fabric, Materials – Metal, and Materials – Wood. All Year 9 and 10 students also take part in a Digital Technologies course, while there is an optional Financial Capability course to support practical life skills.

Our student-centred approach ensures learners have choice and flexibility across all learning areas, helping them discover their strengths and interests while building confidence, creativity, and critical thinking.

Senior Years

At Darfield High School, senior students can choose from a wide range of specialist subjects, allowing them to tailor their learning according to their abilities, interests, and future study or career goals. Our curriculum is flexible, offering courses at different levels to meet the individual needs of each student.

All senior students enrol in a full-time programme of study, typically comprising five NCEA subjects, with selected students able to take six subjects. Compulsory subjects include English (NCEA Levels 1–2), Mathematics (NCEA Level 1), and Physical Education (Years 11–12), ensuring a strong foundation while providing opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Students are supported to plan their senior course selection carefully, helping them achieve their goals and prepare for further study, vocational pathways, or future careers.

We are committed to developing well-rounded, resilient, and thoughtful young people, ready to contribute positively to their communities and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
